A Message from the President
Diaper
changing stations, barrier-free access, child-height WC &
washbasin, child-height urinal in the Ladies’ toilet etc. are all
key initiatives undertaken by shopping centres for their toilets.
Why? The public’s expectations of public toilets have gone
beyond of a toilet being just clean, dry and odor-free.
Shopping centres, and for that matter, all other
buildings and public places that allow access to the general public,
realized the importance of having good public toilets. And how
to achieve a ‘good’ public toilet? RAS has been helping many
toilet owners achieve excellent benchmarks in design, cleanliness
and provisions for public toilets through the Happy Toilet
Programme. At the end of the day, if a toilet user leaves a
public toilet ‘happy’ i.e. satisfied with the facilities, than it’s
a ‘happy’ toilet. Please visit our website for more
information on the Happy Toilet Programme.
Setting standards is just part of RAS’ work, as we
reveal our 2010 goals in the next article. To achieve that, we
have many other activities, like participating in the Project
Million Lotus (PML) – the message is that good toilet etiquette are
acts of compassion, as we think of the next user, when we are using
the toilet; the first HDB shopping centre in the heartlands
achieving a Happy Toilet 5-stars for its toilets; our school
programme successfully launched in pre-schools; being invited by
Design Council Singapore to be part of the 10 Touchpoints Design
Competition; and conducting public talks on good toilet etiquette.
Upcoming events include the launch of the Best
Cleaner award – toilet owners and cleaning contractors, nominate
your best cleaner!; recruitment of more volunteers (we need your
help, as the number of activities increased in our outreach efforts)
and also read the experiences of some of our volunteers; finally,
continue to demand clean public toilets, and do tell us your views
by emailing it to MySay@toilet.org.sg or SMS to
9770-LOOS.
Happy Toilet (experience), healthy people!
